The two ingredients: pressure and oxygen

At its simplest, hyperbaric oxygen therapy combines two things: raised pressure and oxygen. Inside a sealed chamber, a compressor increases the air pressure above the 1.0 ATA we experience at sea level, and the person breathes oxygen in that pressurised environment. Both elements are essential — oxygen alone at normal pressure is not hyperbaric, and pressure without the breathing of oxygen is not the therapy either. This is why the word "hyperbaric" (meaning high pressure) sits alongside "oxygen": the method is defined by breathing oxygen under increased pressure. Understanding this makes the equipment obvious — you need a chamber that can seal and pressurise, which is precisely what a hyperbaric chamber does.

Why a chamber is the essential equipment

Because raised pressure is central to HBOT, a hyperbaric chamber is the one piece of equipment you cannot do without. Soft chambers use a reinforced fabric shell and a compressor to reach mild pressures of 1.3–1.5 ATA, suited to home and wellness use. Hard chambers use a rigid, pressure-certified hull to reach clinical pressures of 2.0–3.0 ATA. Other devices people sometimes confuse with HBOT — such as oxygen concentrators, which only raise oxygen purity at normal pressure — cannot create the pressurised environment and therefore cannot deliver HBOT. So when someone asks what they need to do HBOT, the honest answer is: a hyperbaric chamber, of the type that matches their intended use.

Soft versus clinical HBOT

HBOT is often divided into mild (soft-chamber) and clinical (hard-chamber) forms, distinguished by pressure. Mild hyperbaric therapy at 1.3–1.5 ATA uses a soft chamber and is the common choice for home, wellness and recovery use because it is affordable and self-install. Clinical HBOT at 2.0 ATA and above uses a rigid hard chamber and is used in medical settings under professional supervision. Which form is relevant to you depends on your intended use — and it decides which chamber you would buy.
